July 2013 - "Better Late than Never"
by Peter Thwaites

Some bluebell ‘stands’ or carpets are decades or even centuries old and their appearance is often seen as signalling the start of the British bloom leading to summer.

However, following the coldest March since 1962 growth of the flower stalks was slower than usual and their 'blue carpets' were not seen until late May and June.

June 2013 - "Across the Square"
by Alex Scott

This architectural work of art is one the world’s largest mosques, with a capacity for an astonishing 41,000 worshippers. It features 82 domes, over a 1,000 columns, 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers –10 metres in diameter, 15 metres in height and weighing twelve tonnes. The mosque's first ceremony was the funeral of its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, who is buried at the site.

Reflective pools surround the mosque, amplifying its beauty. The striking white and gold colours shining in the sun are transformed at night by a unique lightning system which reflects the phases of the moon.

May 2013 - "Stonechat"
by Stephen Barrie

Stonechats are robin sized birds. Males have striking black heads with white around the side of their neck, orange-red breasts and a mottled brown back. Females lack the male's black head, but have brown backs and an orange tinge to their chests.

Birds are frequently seen flicking their wings while perched, often doing so on the tops of low bushes. As its name suggests, birds utter a sharp loud call that sound like two stones being tapped together. They breed in western and southern parts of the UK, but disperse more widely in winter.

January 2013 - "Helsinki Island"
by Richard Lewis LRPS

The sea is an essential part of Helsinki. It surrounds the city on three sides: the South, the East and the West. There are around 330 islands off the coast of Helsinki, and many are accessible for recreational use.

In Helsinki it is possible to enjoy the sea even without your own boat. Archipelago cruises depart from the Market Square throughout the summer, and you can also catch a relaxing ferry to the Helsinki Zoo on Korkeasaari Island and to the idyllic town of Porvoo.
