"Jaguar"
|
The
jaguar (Panthera onca) is a wild cat species and the only extant member
of the genus Panthera native to the Americas. The jaguar's present
range extends from Southwestern United States and Mexico in North
America, across much of Central America, and south to Paraguay and
northern Argentina in South America. Though there are single cats now
living within the western United States, the species has largely been
extirpated from the United States since the early 20th century. It is
listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List; and its numbers are
declining. Threats include loss and fragmentation of habitat.
Overall, the jaguar is the largest native cat species of the New World
and the third largest in the world. This spotted cat closely resembles
the leopard, but is usually larger and sturdier. It ranges across a
variety of forested and open terrains, but its preferred habitat is
tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forest, swamps and wooded
regions. The jaguar enjoys swimming and is largely a solitary,
opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush predator at the top of the food chain.
As a keystone species it plays an important role in stabilizing
ecosystems and regulating prey populations.

November 2018 -
"Fireworks"
|
Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night is an annual celebration on the
evening of 5 November.
It marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in
which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes,
attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London, United
Kingdom.

"Amur Leopard"
|
The
Amur leopard, Panthera Pardus Orientalis, is the rarest big cat in the
world and yet is still a relatively unknown species of leopard outside
of its homeland in Russia. Also known as the Far Eastern leopard the
approximate population stands at fewer than individuals remaining in
the wild.

This shot of a Wren was taken using a Swarovski ATS 80 HD attached to
my Olympus E-System. The resolution, sharpness and lack of vignetting
of this digiscope are very impressive.

"Orchid"
|
An example of the many orchids that can be seen at Kew Gardens in London.
Some years ago I attended a Royal Photographic Society visit to the gardens
which included the opportunity to photograph specimens in the nursery.
The nursery is not open to the public but a special arrangement was
made for the benefit of members of the RPS.
This particular image was produced using a technique known as image
stacking.

The
Scissortail sergeant or Striptailed damselfish grows to a length of
about 16 cm (6 in). They are coral reef dwelling fish, living at depths
of up to 15 m (50 ft) in tropical reaches, often living in a group
surrounding a single head of coral in the Indo-Pacific area.

"Tisted Hoar"
|
Under clear frosty nights in winter, soft ice crystals might form on
vegetation or any object that has been chilled below freezing point by
radiation cooling. This deposit of ice crystals is known as hoar frost
and may sometimes be so thick that it might look like snow.

There
is a brief interval before sunrise in Kenya’s Masai Mara when, if
the conditions are just right, the sun’s rays reflect from the moisture
and dust in the atmosphere to produce a spectrum of colour in the sky.
